In light of Robert Eggers’ film Nosferatu and the end of What We Do in Shadows, Mark, Lawrence, Sarahlyn, and Al discuss the many vampire shows and films all the way back to Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel (and of course the folklore goes back much further).
The journey from the Dracula novel to the 1922 rip-off Nosferatu through a 1979 Werner Herzog version to the current one is interesting, and we try to figure out whom we’re supposed to sympathize with in these stories, whether they’re actually scary, and the role of sex. (See our take on the 1931 Dracula film in our Halloween episode.)
What We Do in Shadows stands as a consistently brilliant spoof of this genre, though not all of us were taken with it, and it shows the dual nature of the character: It’s a curse, but yet it’s awesome.
