In light of the new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, we discuss the films of director (and occasional writer) Tim Burton since his career was firmly established via short 1984 film Frankenweenie, 1985’s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, and the original 1988 Beetlejuice. More recently, he’s been on tap with Disney and has his hands in so much IP that we’ve already covered him in multiple previous episodes.

Mark, Lawrence, Sarahlyn, and Al have very mixed reactions to the new film, but we agree that the animation style that characterizes his vision is very rich and has had a massive cultural impact. (Though he may owe some credit to Edward Gorey, and it’s hard to separate Burton’s visual aesthetic from the musical contributions of his partner Danny Elfman.)

We discuss his stop-motion work, his Batman films, his more traditional filmmaking (e.g. Ed Wood, Big Eyes), his Disney commissions, and his old classics like Mars Attacks and Edward Scissorhands.

What is Pretty Much Pop?

Pretty Much Pop brings together philosophers, artists, comedians, and other smart folks to talk about media and how we consume it: TV, film, music, novels, games, comics, comedy, theater, podcasts, and more. Most of what (other) people like is pretty weird when you think about it, so thinking about it is what we do.
