We discuss the 2015 and 2024 Pixar films by writer/director Pete Docter , featuring the usual crew of Mark, Lawrence, Sarahlyn, and Al.

These films show kids that it’s OK to be sad and how to cope with anxiety. Is the films’ emotional impact objectionably manipulative? Does the “mental landscape” depicted helpfully represent the various elements we juggle, or is it just a fun pile of metaphors? Was Joy the real villain? Does any other movies accomplish something comparable to what we see in these films?

The various elements of the mind model are laid out on this Fandom page. We refer to a couple of brutal reviews of the films by Walter Chaw: Inside Out, Inside Out 2.

What is Pretty Much Pop?

Pretty Much Pop brings together philosophers, artists, comedians, and other smart folks to talk about media and how we consume it: TV, film, music, novels, games, comics, comedy, theater, podcasts, and more. Most of what (other) people like is pretty weird when you think about it, so thinking about it is what we do.
