Mark, Lawrence, Sarahlyn, and Al are joined by returning special guest comic scholar Vi Burlew to talk about the new film The Marvels as well as more generally what’s been coming out in film and TV from the Marvel folks in the latest “phase.” Does Marvel have a consistent tone at this point (and should it)? What explains the box office poison of the new film despite its being perhaps better aimed at its core teen audience than other recent offerings?
Did The Marvels include too many distinct elements treated without enough depth? Is any invincible, flawless super character (a la Superman) inevitably pretty bland? What does it mean that our culture is still pumping out superhero media at this point? Is the only thing that makes this not endless rehash the inclusion of more ethnic identities?

Our Aftertalk, made available for a limited time to you listeners on the PMP feed and site, features a flurry of comics recommendations, talking through X-Men, Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Superman, and more. Plus, do the Marvel films work standalone? Lawrence recommends the film Thanksgiving and Invincible.
